RA1 Labs is an independent AI research org.

we are a professional one person with a GPU and a to-do list research lab. no committee, no roadmap theater. things get built here because one specific person decided they should exist.

# why.md

AI is deployed at scale without real understanding of what these systems compute. that sentence should bother you. it bothers me enough that i founded a company about it.

You cannot trust what you do not verify.

so the lab optimizes for exactly two things: making models run better (inference architecture) and making models legible (mechanistic interpretability). everything else is implementation detail.

## the plan

  • xfound a lab (2026, wyoming, population: 1)
  • xacquire GPU
  • make small GPUs embarrassingly fast
  • open the black box. keep receipts.
  • everything else
the future is made,
not waited for.

RESEARCH DIRECTION 01
INFERENCE ARCHITECTURE

custom CUDA kernels. dispatch systems. memory-hierarchy tricks. squeezing inference latency out of GPUs the spec sheet gave up on.

translation: making small GPUs punch way above their weight class.

FIELD NOTES

  • xthe fastest memcpy is the one you delete
  • x"resource-constrained" is a polite word for the GPU i actually own
  • xif the profiler says it's fine, profile the profiler
STATUS: ACTIVELY COOKING · MEETINGS HELD ABOUT IT: 0
mech_interp.doc

RESEARCH DIRECTION 02
MECHANISTIC INTERPRETABILITY

figuring out what neural nets actually compute — not what the marketing says, not what the loss curve implies. circuits, attribution, hardware traces. verification-first, always.

the network already knows what it's doing. it's just being cagey about it.

FIELD NOTES

  • xa beautiful hypothesis dies to one good trace. bring traces.
  • xinterpretability without verification is astrology for tensors
  • x"the model probably..." — no. trace it or drop it.

COMPRESSION AS PROOF

core thesis. load-bearing. do not remove.

if you can compress a system's behavior into something small enough to check, you understand it. if you can't, you don't — you're just vibing with extra steps.

you can't trust what you can't verify.

so everything here is built to be verifiable: kernels you can time, circuits you can trace, claims you can re-run.

tattoo-grade thesis. still true.

the lab is one person and he is busy making GPUs go fast.

43 slides, all gradients. deleted on day one.

no investors, no committee, no roadmap theater. the deck sleeps here.
